Why Vorarlberg?
Less than 100 km separate the shore of Lake Constance from the Silvretta glaciers – and in between, Vorarlberg squeezes in a remarkable amount: the Bregenz Festival with its spectacular floating stage, the Bregenzerwald with its cheese route and award-winning timber architecture, and on the Arlberg, with Lech and Zürs, the cradle of Alpine skiing, where the ski lesson was invented. Everything is close, distances are short – ideal for a holiday combining lake, culture and high mountains.
Best time to visit
| Period | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| July – August | Bregenz Festival and mountain summer – peak season by the lake |
| June & September | Hiking in the Bregenzerwald and Montafon, far quieter |
| December – April | Ski Arlberg (Austria’s largest connected ski area), Montafon, Brandnertal |
| May & October – November | Shoulder season: cheese route, spas and the Rhine valley towns |
The most beautiful spots
Bregenz & the Pfänder
The festival city on Lake Constance with the world’s largest floating stage. The Pfänder cable car serves up views over the lake, the Rhine valley and 240 Alpine peaks.
Bregenzerwald
Rolling hills, villages like Schwarzenberg and Mellau, plus the KäseStrasse cheese route and timber architecture that draws architects from around the world.
Lech-Zürs on the Arlberg
Upmarket ski village and summer hiking base with the “White Ring” – one of the most legendary ski circuits in the Alps.
Montafon & Silvretta
The valley beneath Piz Buin, with the Silvretta High Alpine Road winding up to the reservoir at Bielerhöhe (2,032 m) – a cycling classic and hiking paradise.
Where to stay
Lech and Zürs play in the Alps’ top price league; the Bregenzerwald, Klostertal and Montafon are cheaper and more down-to-earth. During the festival weeks in July/August, Bregenz and its surroundings book out early – reserve in good time or stay in the Rhine valley.
