Verzasca valley
Emerald water, the Roman arched bridge Ponte dei Salti at Lavertezzo and the 220 m dam wall from which James Bond jumped (“GoldenEye”).
Maggia valley & Centovalli
Stone villages, waterfalls and the Centovalli railway to Domodossola – one of Europe’s loveliest branch lines.
Where to stay
Ascona and Lugano are the priciest addresses; Locarno, Tenero and the valleys are cheaper. Typically Ticinese: rustici – converted stone houses as holiday homes. Book early for the summer holidays and Easter; lakeside supply is limited.
