Mecklenburg Lake District

More than 1,000 lakes linked by canals and rivers: Europe’s largest connected waterscape is paradise for houseboat captains, paddlers and anyone in search of peace.

At a glance: Best time to visit: May–September · Houseboats without a licence (charter certificate) · The Müritz is Germany’s largest lake lying entirely within the country · Ideal for water-based holidays, anglers and wildlife watchers.

Why the Lake District?

Nowhere else in Central Europe can you cruise from lake to lake for weeks without mooring at the same shore twice. Most of the waters between the Müritz, Plau and Rheinsberg can be navigated licence-free – after a short briefing you steer your own houseboat. Ashore await Müritz National Park with its ospreys and white-tailed eagles, tree-lined avenues, manor houses and canoe rest stops every few kilometres.

The most beautiful spots

Müritz & Waren

Germany’s largest fully domestic lake, with the pretty harbour town of Waren as a base. The Müritzeum explains the region’s underwater world.

Müritz National Park

Ancient forest, moors and Germany’s best chances of spotting white-tailed and osprey eagles. Best explored by bike or canoe – cars stay outside.

Rheinsberg & the small lakes

Winding canals, silent lakes and Rheinsberg Palace – the loveliest canoeing area, ideal for beginners.

Plau am See & Malchow

Classic little water towns with swing-bridge charm at the western end of the waterway network.

Where to stay

The special thing here: your accommodation can float. Houseboats start at around €1,000 a week (low season); on land, holiday homes with lake frontage and jetty dominate – perfect for anglers. Book fixed accommodation in Waren and Plau early for the school summer holidays.
