Emperor Franz Joseph spent 82 summers here – and you instantly see why: between Lake Wolfgang, Lake Attersee and Lake Traunsee, bath-warm lakes line up against steep limestone peaks, with villages in between that look like operetta stage sets. In Hallstatt, salt has been mined for 7,000 years – the Salzwelten count as the oldest salt mine in the world. And above it all towers the Dachstein with its ice caves and the “5fingers” viewing platform. Culture, lakes and mountains – nowhere in Austria are they packed closer together.

Hallstatt & the Salzwelten
The most photographed village in the Alps, wedged between lake and rock face. The Salzwelten, with miners’ slides and an underground salt lake, are the world’s oldest salt mine.
Lake Wolfgang & Schafberg
St. Wolfgang with the “White Horse Inn”, plus the steam-powered Schafberg railway – at the top waits Austria’s most famous lake panorama.
Bad Ischl & the Kaiservilla
The summer residence of Emperor Franz Joseph and Sisi, plus the Lehár villa, the Zauner confectionery and the imperial park – a day of monarchy up close.
Dachstein & Krippenstein
The giant ice cave, the mammoth cave and the “5fingers” platform jutting out over a 400 m drop – the region’s most spectacular mountain day.
Where to stay
Hallstatt itself is tiny and books out fast – Obertraun across the lake is the relaxed alternative. Families head for the gently shelving Lake Wolfgang or Mondsee; peace-seekers for Lake Grundlsee in the Styrian part. Reserve lake-view rooms for July/August half a year ahead.
