Bastei & Neurathen rock castle
The 76 m stone bridge between the rock towers is THE landmark. At sunrise you’ll have it almost to yourself – from mid-morning it gets crowded.
Königstein Fortress
One of Europe’s largest hilltop fortresses, never conquered, with 360-degree views over the Elbe valley.
Schrammsteine & Kirnitzsch valley
The wildest corner of the national park: a ridge walk to the Schrammstein viewpoint, then the historic Kirnitzschtal tram to the Lichtenhain waterfall.
Rathen & the Elbe ferries
Car-free spa village below the Bastei with the Felsenbühne, Europe’s loveliest natural stage. The current-driven reaction ferry across the Elbe is an experience in itself.
Where to stay
Most popular bases: Rathen and Königstein (right in the middle), Bad Schandau (spa town with thermal baths) and Pirna (cheaper, good rail link to Dresden). Book early for peak season and golden autumn – supply in the small villages is limited.
