The North Sea is pure natural drama: twice a day the sea retreats for miles, laying the seabed bare – nowhere else in Germany can you stroll across the bottom of the sea. Add the East and North Frisian islands with their wide sandy beaches, the healthy stimulating climate (officially recognised for respiratory and skin cures) and dykes with sheep instead of high-rises behind them.

The most beautiful spots
Sylt
Germany’s most famous island: 40 km of western beach, walks between Ellenbogen and Hörnum, plus Kampen and Westerland. Pricey, but doable via car train or as a day trip.
East Frisian Islands (Norderney, Juist, Langeoog)
All car-free except Norderney and Borkum – ideal for families. Juist and Langeoog can only be reached by ferry, which explains their slowed-down character.
St. Peter-Ording
12 km of beach, the famous pile dwellings and Germany’s biggest beach-sailing area. On the mainland, so no ferry needed.
Büsum & Cuxhaven
Classic family resorts with shrimp cutters, guided mudflat walks and good transport links – Cuxhaven has a direct rail connection.
Where to stay
Holiday apartments and guesthouses dominate on the islands; in the school summer holidays the good ones are often gone a year ahead. Mainland resorts like Büsum or St. Peter-Ording are usually cheaper than the islands – Sylt is in a price league of its own.
