Lucerne is perfect starter Switzerland: stroll across the Chapel Bridge – Europe’s oldest covered wooden bridge – in the morning, cross the many-armed Lake Lucerne by paddle steamer at noon, then ride the world’s steepest cogwheel railway (48% gradient!) up Pilatus in the afternoon. Across the lake waits the Rigi, “queen of the mountains”, climbed by Europe’s first mountain railway back in 1871. Everything works without a car – lake and railways form a single excursion network.

The most beautiful spots
Old town & Chapel Bridge
The water tower, painted façades and the moving Lion Monument – Lucerne’s old town is small enough for half a day and lovely enough for two.
Pilatus
The “Golden Round Trip”: boat to Alpnachstad, the world’s steepest cogwheel railway up, gondola back down – the best day out in central Switzerland.
Rigi
Gentle meadows instead of jagged rock: the Rigi is the hiking and sunshine mountain, with views over 13 lakes. Cogwheel trains run from Vitznau and Goldau.
Titlis & Engelberg
From Engelberg the rotating gondola floats up to 3,020 m, to a glacier cave and suspension bridge – snow guaranteed, even in August.
Where to stay
Lucerne itself is the most practical base, though not the cheapest. The lakeside villages of Weggis, Vitznau and Beckenried are calmer and better value – and superbly connected by boat. For mountain fans, Engelberg is the alternative with its own ski area.
