Why Lüneburg Heath?
When the heather starts blooming in early August, nothing in Germany compares: miles of purple, dotted with juniper, birches and the shaggy Heidschnucke sheep that have tended this landscape for centuries. The nature reserve around the Wilseder Berg is closed to cars – you explore on foot, by bike or in a horse-drawn carriage. That slow pace is exactly the charm, and with Hamburg on the doorstep the heath makes a perfect weekend escape too.

The most beautiful spots
Wilseder Berg & Wilsede
At 169 m the “summit” of the north German plain – on clear days you can see Hamburg. The car-free heath village of Wilsede feels like an open-air museum but is genuinely inhabited.
Undeloh & Niederhaverbeck
The classic starting points for hikes and carriage rides into the nature reserve – thatched farmhouses included.
Lüneburg
The old salt town with crooked gabled houses, the Stint quarter and a salt-water spa – the perfect rainy-day and culture stop.
Southern heath near Müden & Celle
The quieter alternative in the south, easy to combine with Celle’s half-timbered old town and palace.
Where to stay
Typical are thatched country hotels, heath farms and holiday apartments. During the heather bloom (August) the villages in the core area – Undeloh, around Wilsede, Bispingen – sell out months ahead; if you want the bloom, book by spring at the latest. Outside the bloom the heath is a bargain.
