Why Graubünden?
Graubünden (the Grisons) is Switzerland’s largest and wildest canton: 150 valleys, 615 lakes and the country’s only national park, where nature has been left entirely to itself since 1914. The Albula and Bernina lines of the Rhaetian Railway are UNESCO World Heritage – the Bernina Express across the Landwasser Viaduct and the 2,253 m Bernina Pass ranks among the world’s most spectacular train rides. And in the Engadin, the famous “champagne climate” delivers over 300 days of sunshine.
Best time to visit
| Period | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| June – October | Hiking and biking; mountain lakes like Cauma and Palpuogna at their finest |
| September – October | Golden larch forests in the Engadin – the best time for photos |
| December – April | Skiing in St. Moritz, Davos-Klosters, Laax and Arosa-Lenzerheide |
| May & November | Shoulder season: many hotels closed, but panoramic trains blissfully empty |
The most beautiful spots
Engadin & St. Moritz
The high valley at 1,800 m with its chain of lakes, world-resort glamour and that unique light. Next door lie quieter villages such as Pontresina, Sils and Zuoz.
Bernina Express & Landwasser Viaduct
From Chur across the 65 m Landwasser Viaduct near Filisur all the way to Tirano in Italy – a UNESCO heritage line with panorama cars.
Swiss National Park
Near Zernez, stags bellow in autumn; ibex and bearded vultures are almost guaranteed. Strict trail rules – in return, wilderness like nowhere else in the Alps.
Flims-Laax & the Rhine Gorge
The turquoise Lake Cauma and the Rhine Gorge (“Swiss Grand Canyon”) in summer; one of Europe’s best freestyle ski areas in winter.
Where to stay
St. Moritz and Davos are world resorts with prices to match – Scuol, Bergün or the Prättigau are far cheaper. Typical are holiday apartments in old Engadin houses with thick walls and sgraffito façades. Book winter peak weeks (Christmas, February) early.
