Lake Constance holiday region

Three countries, one lake: between Alpine views, the flower island of Mainau and medieval towns, Lake Constance feels almost Mediterranean – Germany’s southernmost holiday mood.

At a glance: Best time to visit: April–October · Three countries (D/A/CH) around one shore · 260 km Lake Constance Cycle Path · Ideal for cyclists, families and culture lovers.

Why Lake Constance?

Few regions pack so much variety into so little space: stroll across the flower island of Mainau in the morning, take the ferry to Switzerland at lunchtime, and watch the sunset from Lindau harbour with the Alps behind. The mild climate lets wine and even figs grow along the shore, and the fully signposted Lake Constance Cycle Path makes the circumnavigation a classic for leisurely cyclists.

The most beautiful spots

Konstanz & Mainau Island

The largest town on the lake with a historic old quarter – and just offshore, the flower island of Mainau, the region’s most visited attraction.

Lindau

The old town sits entirely on an island; the harbour entrance with its lion and lighthouse is the lake’s postcard view.

Meersburg

Old castle, vineyards and a ferry link to Konstanz – the prettiest little town on the northern shore.

Reichenau Island & Unteruhldingen

A UNESCO double: the monastic island of Reichenau and the reconstructed Stone Age pile dwellings.

Where to stay

The German shore (Konstanz to Lindau) has the widest choice. To save money, stay a row of villages back from the lake or on the Austrian side in Bregenz. Book early for the summer holidays and the Bregenz Festival weeks.
